Grupo Desarrollo Infraestructura, S.A. de C.V. (GDI) purchased a Series S-50 Flexifloat ferry system to transport pipeline equipment across a lagoon to an island in Vera Cruz, Mexico. Previously the only practical access to the island was by traversing a small beach 25 miles south of the jobsite. Additionally, this beach was seasonally restricted due to nesting sea turtles and only accessible during low tide. The portable barge system allowed GDI to reduce their travel distance to approximately 500 feet, uninterrupted, saving them time and money as well as expediting the construction of the pipeline.
The 40’ x 60’ x 5’ barge was designed to support an 80-ton deck load while drafting less than 30 inches. Loading Ramps attached at both ends provided a smooth roll-on/roll-off operation for rubber-tired, tractor trailers. A skid-mounted double-drum winch was used with fairlead attachments to propel the ferry. Hydraulically-powered spuds anchored the barge when loading and unloading at the shore.
