When tasked with setting transmission poles on Lake Ray Hubbard near Dallas, Texas, Auger Services, Inc. used a Series S-50 Flexifloat spud barge to support their Mantis 15010 hydraulic crawler crane. A 60’ x 70’, slotted configuration was designed to support the 77-ton capacity crawler crane while drilling pier footings and setting the tubular steel monopoles. The 5-foot-deep hull drafted less than 30 inches in water depths as shallow as 4 feet. The 20’ x 20’ slot kept the needed working radius to a minimum while the barge maintained excellent stability while supporting the 240,000-pound deck load. Hydraulic winches were used to operate the anchoring spuds. The drilling contractor also used Series H-50 and S-50 transport barges to deliver materials from the shore to the work area.
